The technology

Alternating current (AC) charging vs fast (DC) charging

Most home and business chargers use alternating current (AC): the car itself converts that current to direct current before it reaches the battery, which limits the charging speed to the capacity of the vehicle's own onboard charger.

Fast (DC) charging does that conversion in the charging point itself, using much more powerful equipment, delivering direct current straight into the battery. That's why it allows much shorter charging times, although it demands a considerably more capable electrical installation.

The trade-off is cost: a fast charger is a much more expensive piece of equipment than a domestic wallbox, and the installation needs more available power at its location. That's why it doesn't make sense everywhere, only where the time saved justifies the investment.

Who does it make sense to install fast charging for?

Fast charging fits best in transit locations, where the driver isn't going to stay for hours: petrol stations, service areas, locations next to main roads, or businesses designed for a short stop.

It doesn't usually make sense at a private home, where the car sits overnight and a more affordable AC charge is more than enough. It's also not the best option for businesses where the customer stays several hours, such as offices or some hotels, where a lower-power, lower-cost AC charger is more cost-effective.

It does make sense combined with other services that briefly keep the customer around: a café, a convenience store or a rest area, where the 20-30 minutes of charging is put to natural use without anyone having to wait around doing nothing.

With AC charging, the car's own charger converts the alternating current to direct current before it reaches the battery, which limits the speed.
